Surprise Certificate

April 17, 2007

I got one of those big first class envelopes in the mail today. It was from my LIS Program. As I was opening it, I was trying to think what they would be sending me. To my surprise, it was a letter stating;

Enclosed please find your recognition certificate which was presented at the LIS Program Annual Recognition on April 6th, 2007. We regret that you were unable to attend the event.

Congratulations on your achievement.

Sincerely,
Library and Information Science Program

I was like, “huh? what are they talking about?” Then I viewed the certificate and it said it was in appreciation of my service for being the webmaster to one of our student organizations.

“Awwwww………how nice,” I thought.

Wish I had been notified I was to receive a certificate at the Annual Recognition Event. Maybe I could have planned on being there.

Ohh well. I was in Alabama anyway. So nice they consider it an achievement. I just look at it as an opportunity to do what I love. I should be thanking them with a certificate it you ask me. ;)

4 Out Of 5

February 8, 2007

I just found out I got a 4 out of 5 on one of the easiest first projects in my website development class. The instructor (who is really cool by the way) said I did not close a couple of tags right. Apparently I accidently closed a br tag like this br/. I must have overlooked it. Additionally I left out some other small element. Whatever. I messed up my 4.0 GPA last semester when I got an A-.

Guess my life is over. Might as well jump off a bridge. Ha! Ha!

One of the most important things I have learned has come from the director of the library I currently work. One day he asked me how I was doing. I told him how happy I was that the semester had ended and that I aced my classes. He then pulled me aside and said “Have I ever given you my shpeal?” I looked at him baffled and said, “I don’t think so.” He then said “I tell this to every intern that walks in the door. Grades don’t matter.” I didn’t know what to say. I mean, a part of me knows that, but I still feel the pressure to do well from society and so on. He then said, “Sarah, in all my years I have never once asked a job candidate what their grade point average was in school, etc. It just doesn’t matter. I can tell by talking to a person whether or not they have what it takes to succeed.” I just stood there stunned. I didn’t know what to say other than listen. I respect this man, I mean he went to University of Michigan, has worked for the library for over 30 years (we had his retirement party at work today. He’s moving to Maine where he has built a house on the ocean.). His words meant more than any instructor because they come from a place of experience. Something no school could ever teach.

So now every time I get down on myself for not getting the BEST grade, I remember his wise words and know that I did my best. I will be okay with or without the perfect score.

Craziness

April 29, 2006

So I babysat for a couple hours tonight after I got off my full-time job. I have a final I have barely studied for that I must take by 11:00 pm tomorrow night. I have an annotated bibliography due by the end of tonight which means no studying for the final. The family I sat for tonight forgot to pay me for watching their kids, and I felt too weird asking for it. After the sitting job, I stopped by my co-workers house here in Hamtown, whose cats I have been caring for all week (volunteer work). I was going to clean their kitty litter, but figured changing two poopy diapers within two hours was about all I could handle in that area for one day. Now it is 9:00 pm and I can almost allow myself to relax before I cram, go to sleep, get up to work an 8 hour day (making up for having monday off) and trying to do more cramming before finally taking my final before 11:00 pm. Ohh and here I am wasting precious time on a BLOG. You see where my priorities are people? Bad me. Bad.
It’s called procrastination and avoidance. For real….I’m getting to work now.

I’m so pooped you guys:(

*I did call the family and they are going to pay me next time I see them. I felt so awkward calling.

Go Heidi!

April 27, 2006

My fellow library school cohort Heidi was quoted on >ALA Techsource yesterday (regarding LIS students in a 2.0 world). Thanks for representing Wayne State Heidi!! Very nice. You’re so on top of everything!!

I too am glad that I have chosen Wayne State’s program. I’m especially pleased and grateful that I had professor Li as one of my first experiences in the program. She is one great professor/advisor. Like Heidi, she gave me a list of classes associated with my area of interest (Information Science/Technology) early on. Additionally, she e-mailed each and every one of her students (independantly) their grades along with her comments. That really showed me how passionate she is and her regard for us students.

Heidi pretty much summed it up though, so go and check that link out:)

School Stuff

April 25, 2006

Okay, I’m totally geeked but stressed. This is my last week of school. I have knocked out many projects so far and have only a couple more to do as well as study for a final I have on Thursday. Well, I have till Saturday to actually do it. I’ll have to start studying tomorrow night though.

Here is the project I’ve been stressing over these last few days. I had to do a pathfinder and will be presenting it in class tomorrow morning. It’s nothing phenomenal, but I’m happy it’s finally over and done with. I’m one of the few people who did mine in website form. Most people have been doing their projects in Powerpoint. I thought it would be more fun if I did mine as a website though.

There were a million resources I could have thrown into this pathfinder, but I couldn’t share them all. Please don’t e-mail me with things I have missed as I already know. Believe me, it was hard disseminating all the the available information for my selection. This was only meant to serve as a guideline for those researching the topic at Southfield Public Library and online.

I would accept/appreciate any constructive criticism you might have though.
I’m kind of debating whether I should not include the first two books under “Circulating Books for Adults” and “Circulating Books for Children” since they Really aren’t computer science books. They are more computer literacy. I don’t really remember why I wanted to include them now though. Debating if I need to exclude them though. Hmmmm…….Ann? Heidi? Any thoughts?

* I decided I had better take those irrelevant sources out on my own. Hmmfff!!*
