I swear…they came in a boat!
March 16, 2007
Jeff and I stopped by a McDonald’s tonight because he read in the paper that some of their coffee at the high end Royal Oak location was supposedly tastier than Starbucks (which I personally don’t care for all that much anway). I don’t have to go to work or school tomorrow so I figured why not stay up half the night with a caffeine buzz. Soon you’ll see where I used all the extra energy.
While we were sipping our premium coffees and Jeff complained how it “wasn’t all that”, a memory came back to me. I was 5 and I was enjoying a happy meal. Yes, my parents bought my sisters and I happy meals at age 4 and 5 (and throughout our childhood). We’re still alive and healthy as you can see. So it couldn’t have been THAT bad. Anyway, so the memory came back and I asked Jeff, “do you remember the happy meals that came in a boat and there were different colored ones…OHH! And stickers…..you could put stickers on the boats! My sisters and I LOVED those boats. We used to play with them in the tub and in the pool in the summer. We use to hope we would get one of the ones we didn’t have already. Do you remember those Jeff?! Must have been 1983 or so.“
Jeff said “no” and laughed like I was lying. So when we got home I went straight to my computer to start my research. At first I found nothing. Absolutely nadda.
Not one picture came up and I tried everything in the Google search engine; “Mcdonalds happy meal boat,” “mcdonalds kids meal boat,” “mcdonalds meal came in a boat,” “mcdonalds happymeal 1980s boat” and on and on. I eventually decided to call my mom to ask her if she remembered. Of course she was not around, so I called my dad all the way in Alabama.
“Dad, what are you doing?“
“I’m watching a basketball game. What’s up?!“
“do you remember Mcdonald’s kids meals coming in a 2 piece boat when we were little? With stickers you could stick on them? Remember us kids loved them?“
“No.“
“WHAT?!!“
“Maybe your mom remembers…did you ask her?“
“No! She wasn’t answering. GEEZ!! Why doesn’t anyone remember things I remember in my childhood. Errr…..well they did and I will prove it.“
Next, I called my year younger sister.
“Jessica? Do you remember happy meals from Mcdonalds coming in a boat and we used to have different ones and play with them in the bathtub, etc.?“
“No…..I mean kinda. No, not really.“
“Errrrrrrr…..“
After she started pretending to remember (to make me feel better) I got off the phone and decided not to call anyone else about it (considering everyone else seems to be having the early signs of Alzheimers). I decided I had to find it myself to prove to everyone that my memory far exceeds theirs when it comes to my youth.
Eventually I hit gold (sort of), I found this Wikipedia article which gave me a glimmer of hope. It was enough to show Jeff that I was not imagining my “happy meal boat”.
“Burger Chef. Not Mcdonalds!” he said.
“I don’t remember it being Burger Chef (whatever that is), but I guess my memory of Mcdonalds could be wrong.“
I was not convinced it was “Burger Chef” and even called my dad back to ask him if he recalled bringing us to such a place. He said “no,” so I continued my search…..eventually finding this link which then brought Jeff back to his own childhood. As if reverting back to his youth before my eyes, I witnessed Jeff’s voice go from a semi-deep to a high pitched prepubescent kid squeal, “WOW!! I used to have that. Man….I remember the little briefcase and those slimy worms. I loved those…” I let him live in the moment for a few before I nonchalantly said “yeaaaaahhhhh” and scrolled down past them looking for the highlighted cached words “boat” and “happy meal” as if on a mission. Must.Not.Lose.Focus. “Aha! See this person remembers the Happy Meal boats too!!“
I soon left Jeff in the living room where he must have continued to search, because guess who found photos of happy meal boats in less than five minutes?!
Jeff!!
Drum roll please……
Here they are……the “Ship Shape Happy Meals from Mcdonalds.”

Ahhhhhh…..the memories.
Now do you all remember?!!

Oh man!, I do remember those; although, I was only 3! Ha, Ha, I really do have a vague recollection of them though. How come Mcdonald’s doesn’t do those cute little boats anymore?, Griffin would love them!

I didn’t laugh like you were lying when you mentioned the boat happy meals(sipping my “Premium”roast McDonald’s coffee – paper cup to boot)…although there have been many times in the past that support, shall we say, a distorted recollection of past events [:
I was more laughing because this childhood account of yours, like nearly 75% of your memories seem to occur from the magic age of “when I was five”.
And I’m glad we were able to find them, and that you nearly immediately got your sibling confirmation of the great times had with these vacuum-formed dreams — thanks Andrea (and see you and all things Huntsville very soon.)

Do you remeber the sundaes that cames in the little plastic baseball helmets from Dairy Queen? I think I still have a couple of them left. Ah, you sure are going back to the good old days in your past couple of posts! Hope all is well and that you have a great weekend.

Tony and I were reading your post, and I kept thinking you were crazy; you must be remembering wrong. There were no boats.
But as I came to the pictures…I TOTALLY remembered them! And of course I exclaimed out loud, “Oh Yeah! I remember those!” And then Joseph woke up because I was remembering so loudly.
Thanks for the flashback.

Ha ha! Jennifer, that was such a cute story.
Detroit Bazaar – I don’t recall what Dairy Queen served their ice cream in because I don’t believe my parents ever took us there. I went when I was older (in Alabama) but that was when I was 11 or 12 with my aunt and uncle. I don’t think I ever went there before that.
Isn’t it crazy how much nostalgia comes from our childhood? Toys are special. Hold onto your children’s favorites or take a lot of pictures. They will LOVE looking back at the memories:)
I know I still do:) Thank you internet!!!

I definitely knew exactly what you were talking about before I got to the end. I also remember the Dairy Queen baseball helmets. I also ate McDonald’s all the time when I was a kid.

Also, for me, everything happens “a couple days ago”.

Yes…of course I remember those boats…don’t recall whether it was MacDonalds or Burger Chef…I do recall disappointment when they were no longer around…maybe it was the boats!!!
As a mother of six, however, the boats were a bit of overkill when you had to pick up all the pieces…they never fit togethere the same and even if they did…there were so many of them…yikes!!! I did like the idea of them – kids really thought they were getting something…and food to boot!!!
I love your “memory” Sarah…thank you…for taking me there…

I definitely remember the boats. Do you remember they used to do Flying Saucer type Happy Meal containers too?
I’ve had the baseball helmet sundaes before too, except from Baskin Robbins on Jos. Campau. I had the Expos and the Padres. They did football helmets too (though I never had any of those).
Arch.

Wow! I have no memory of Happy Meals in boats at all! Maybe they only had them in Alabama? Weird!
March 19, 2007 at 10:32 am
Well I grew up in Michigan until I was 13, so they were indeed here in Michigan.
Keep in mind also I was getting happy meals in the early eighties. Is it possible you were no longer buying happy meals?
Hmmm….I do wonder if it was nationwide. I would think it would have to be. It would be cool if they made happy meals geared for the different regions.

No longer buying Happy Meals in the early 80’s? What are you suggesting? Ok, I may have been a little (just a little, mind you) too old for happy meals at that point. What’s funny is that I actually bought a happy meal not too long ago – trying to do the portion control thing and those are really small. Plus you get a toy. Bonus!
March 21, 2007 at 6:02 pm
For sure Ann. I just didn’t know if you were at that age we all go through where we are just “too cool” for anything children related. Ha ha! I remember I would be offended if my mom or dad offered to buy me a kids meal when I was in the older grades of elementary school. “What?!! Me a kids me?! No way mom!! I want what grown ups get…I am 9 now you know..I want the BIG MAC and fries!”
That was back when they still served their burgers in those carcinogenic styrofoam boxes.
Ahhh the memories live on….
BTW- I get a happy meal every once in a while for the same reason:) We all gotta splurge and get some Mickey D’s every once in a great while:)

I seem to remember meals from burger chef being served in a plastic replica of Mickey Mantels Liver, oh wait no, that was super sized, The kids meals would come in a plastic replica of a ford pinto (very small, but quite explosive)

I soooo remember the Happy Meal that came in the space ship! I think about it every once in a while! It came with stickers that you put on the outside out the ship. Stickers of Ronald and his friends!!!

I have been looking for am image forever. I wish the people at the corporation in Oak Brook would take a que at replaying what “happy meals” used to be. Remember when the boxes had jokes and Q&A in the top side corners? I was like six when the boats came out and I know my daughter who is 6 would love it. Thanks for the memories!!

Wow! I’m glad my own research helped you all in yours. I too wish Mcdonald’s would bring some of these back. Sort of like a retro years series. Then they could focus not only only the kids…..but the parents who grew up with these meals.

They had the boats and the flying saucers in Toronto, Canada when I was a kid. Can’t say exactly when, but definetely in the early 80’s.
Thank you for the photos!
Does anyone know where we could find photos of the flying saucers?
July 9, 2008 at 9:21 am
They had the flying saucers & boats in Pittsburgh PA.
Here’s some video that has the original promo with the boats: http://www.liquidgeneration.com/Media/Videos/Viral_Videos/Top_10_Lists/10_Lamest_Happy_Meals_Ever/

On a brief side trip to the WI Dells the other day, we found ourselves walking in Lake Delton. (This is the lake that totally drained into the river taking 3 houses with it.) So now it is dried up. As we were walking a funny purple boat caught my eye. I never had a happy meal boat, I only remember the space ships, but somehow I knew what it was. I picked it up, brushed some of the dirt off, and I found “McDonalds 1986″ molded into the plastic! It had been at the bottom of the lake for 22 years! It is only the bottom of the boat but in pristine condition. This is the first site I found with pictures! Thank you!

So glad my posting is still coming in handy for those of you doing the same kind of research I originally did. I’ll never forget my fond memories of McDonalds Happy Meal boats.
What a great find Amber -A sunken McDonalds happy meal ship!
Love it!

Hello!
My wife and I have a nostalgia blog (http://retromotoca.wordpress.com) and we had been trying for a long time to find something about those boats. When McDonald’s first came to Brazil, in the early 80s, that was one of the first gifts they came with the Happy Meal, but we couldn’t find any local reference. Thanks for clearing things up for us! We took the liberty of using one of your pictures on our post, along with a link to your site.
